The Avila Promise

Together these four promises address concerns most college students face:
1) college affordability and confusion over college costs
2) on-time graduation and student debt
3) securing desirable experiences outside of the classroom
4) getting access to global perspectives.

It's within reach.

As you plan for college, you’re probably dealing with lots of confusion over what college is really going to cost. And don’t forget about books and fees. And what if you want to study abroad?  You and everyone else are worried about student debt. You could even be questioning whether you can really graduate in four years?

That changes with the Avila Promise.

Introducing the Avila Promise

Designed to give students a clearer, more affordable path to their futures, the Avila Promise is built on four cornerstones:

  • Tuition protection from unexpected rate hikes. That includes books and standard campus fees in your tuition.
  • On-time graduation guarantee
  • Guaranteed research or internship experience opportunities
  • Travel award of up to $1,000

Together these four promises address the concerns most college students face: 1) college affordability and confusion over college costs, 2) on-time graduation and student debt, 3) securing valuable experiences outside of the classroom, and 4) getting access to global perspectives.

Considering Avila? Consider this:

What is the Avila Promise?

The Avila Promise provides a clearer, more affordable path to your future. Full-time, first-year, traditional resident students enrolling in the Spring or Fall 2019 will benefit from these four promises:
• Competitive tuition rate – $20,500 – which includes books and campus fees, and protects you from unexpected tuition hikes.
• 4-Year, on-time graduation guarantee – when you do your part, we’ll do ours and you’ll graduate on-time.
• Guaranteed internship or research experience – every student, in every major, will have the opportunity for these valuable experiences.
• Travel award of up to $1,000 – we’ll not only show you the world, we’ll help you pay for it.

Will Avila still offer scholarships?

Absolutely. Avila will continue to offer excellent academic, athletic and performance grants.

More details please:

Didn't Avila lower tuition?

College costs are confusing. Traditionally, private universities across the nation have published their tuition rates with an artificial sticker price, then discounted that price with inflated scholarship amounts. This is called a "high tuition/high discount" pricing model that creates confusion and worry for students. For many families, a private education isn’t even a consideration based solely on this sticker price.

Our mission is to help students succeed. One way we can do this is to give students and their families the information needed to plan for the real tuition cost of a 4-year degree. It starts by bringing transparency and clarity around pricing. We've moved away from the "high tuition/high discount" pricing.

Starting in the Fall 2018, Avila introduced a new, truer tuition price model which 1) lowered the tuition rate, 2) included the costs of books and campus fees, 3) offered tuition protection guaranteeing that our tuition rate will not increase more than three percent per year and 4) protected students from unexpected fee increases and expensive textbooks.

Explain the 4-Year Graduation guarantee.

We know that graduating on-time not only saves additional years of college debt, but it gets students on to their next phase sooner. So, we’re committed to keeping our students on their graduation path. With our on-time graduation guarantee, if you do your part, we’ll do ours. If we don’t, and you don’t graduate on-time, we’ll cover the tuition cost for the courses you’re missing.

What does Tuition Protection mean?

When you enroll at Avila we’ll help you plan for your four-year cost of college guaranteeing that your tuition rate will not go up more than three percent per year. No unexpected tuition or fee hikes. No worry about expensive textbooks.

Why is Avila guaranteeing internships or research experience?

Employers and graduate schools are looking for more than just great grades. They want candidates with experience. So every Avila undergraduate student, in every major, will have the opportunity to engage in an internship or research project before they graduate.

How will the Travel Award work?

Beginning with first-year undergraduate students in Fall 2017, all Avila students will be eligible to apply in their junior year for up to a $1,000 travel award. This award can be used to cover national and international travel expenses through approved courses and research experiences.

I'm already a student, will this benefit me?

While the full Avila Promise was introduced for full-time, first-year traditional undergraduate students, beginning in Fall 2018, all current students are seeing benefits, including:
-- tuition protection from unexpected hikes and fees.
-- their books and campus fees are included in the new tuition rate.
-- first-year students in Fall 2017 are also eligible to apply for the travel award in their junior or senior years.

And while current students don’t fall under the four-year graduation or internship/research experience guarantees, students are already working with their academic advisors on their individual on-time graduation plans, as well as internship or research opportunities.

Are books and campus fees gone?

Starting Fall 2018 your books and campus fees are included in your tuition. Course/lab fees will be in addition to the published tuition rate. A complete list of course/lab fees can be found in the course schedule and vary by major. Avila provides books through a third-party book rental company and all books typically need to be returned at the end of each semester. Exact return policies are set by the book rental company.

Other questions we considered:

How will this change Avila?

From an educational experience, it won’t. For more than 100 years, Avila University has been a stellar educational value for students. Without eliminating anything from the Avila experience – in or outside the classroom – the Avila Promise simply makes the university’s value even more apparent.

Will this attract new students?

We hope so. While we believe that changing our tuition model will result in an increased interest in Avila, we’re truly excited by the impact the Avila Promise will have on our students’ success.

How is enrollment at Avila?

Avila had a record undergraduate enrollment in Fall 2015, serving 1,381 students. In talking to our students, we knew there was still room for growth. Students found our tuition list price and discounting to be confusing. Quite a few told us that they seriously considered not even applying because they felt they couldn't afford an Avila education. So, while Fall 2016 was down from that record undergraduate class we have the capacity to bring an Avila education to even more students.

Will this change the type of students Avila will now attract?

Avila has an amazingly diverse campus and that will not change. The Avila Promise will make Avila an affordable option for families who might have automatically written off private universities because of costs.

What will the Avila Promise cost Avila?

In the short-term, there will be some costs to the university. But over the long-term, the strength of the Avila Promise and its positive impact on retention and graduation rates, along with the tuition clarity that our new pricing model brings will offset any short-term costs. It's the right thing to do for our students and the university.

Where’s the fine print?

The Avila Promise is available to all traditional, full-time undergraduate students beginning in the Fall 2018.

Truer tuition pricing*a more transparent tuition model that lowers the published price by moving away from traditional “high price/high discount” models. Avila’s new tuition pricing includes all books and standard campus fees.

*Course/lab fees are in addition to the published tuition rate. A complete list of course/lab fees can be found in the course schedule and vary by major. Avila provides books through a third-party book rental company and all books typically need to be returned at the end of each semester. Exact return policies are set by the book rental company.

Tuition Protection*an up-front, four-year*, total cost of tuition guarantee with no surprise tuition increases, an affordable, monthly payment plan and our guarantee that your tuition will not increase more than 3% per year.

*If a student is in a program requiring five years for completion, students will be provided this promise and information based on a five-year tuition guarantee.

Four Year Graduation Lock*our assurance that if you do your part, we’ll do ours, and you will graduate in four years. Guaranteed. For our part, Avila University will provide the exceptional faculty and staff advisors, as well as the courses, resources and experiences students need for graduation.

*
This is open to students who start at Avila Fall 2018 as first year or transfer students. Due to professional licensure standards and other requirements, some majors may require five years for graduation. In those programs, Avila would offer students a five-year graduation lock guarantee.

To maintain inclusion in the graduation lock, the student’s responsibilities include:

  • The student must maintain continuous full-time status all four years for fall and spring terms. Enrollment in summer terms is optional.

  • The student will follow the prescribed plan of study as determined with their academic advisor and stay in good standing (academically, disciplinarily and financially) with the university.

  • The student must meet with his/her advisor each semester prior to registration and enroll during the first month of open registration each term.

  • Students declare a major in a timely manner, typically no later than the first four semesters of study. Some majors require the student to declare the major as early as within the first year in order to maintain the ability to complete coursework in the 4-year timeframe.  This is not to discourage students from changing their majors to a more preferred degree, but the university may not be able to maintain the graduation lock promise if the student chooses too late in their time frame to complete all required coursework.  Students must meet with their academic advisor to determine a new plan of study with any major or minor changes.

If a student meets all of the above requirements and is still unable to graduate on time, Avila University will waive the additional tuition costs to complete the course work for his/her declared major. The student must agree to apply and accept any offered federal and state grant aid.

Guaranteed Internship or Research Experience*our pledge that every undergraduate student, in every major, will have the opportunity to integrate classroom theory into practical experience by engaging in an internship or research project.

*This includes conducting research with faculty mentors or engaging in a practical internship or clinical experience.

Up to a $1,000 Travel Award*financial support to help our students gain experiences in national and international settings. This is a one-time award of up to $1,000 to help cover travel expenses only.

* Students can apply for travel awards once they have reached junior standing. This is open for students who:

  • are in good standing (academically, financially, and disciplinary) at Avila University at the time of application and

  • started at Avila Fall 2017 or after as first time, first year students, or

  • entered Avila as a transfer student with 54 or fewer credit hours starting Fall 2018.  Transfer students must have completed a minimum of 2 semesters at Avila enrolled full-time to be eligible.

If awarded, the Travel Award can be used for travel expenses:
    1) On any travel experience as part of a course or research experience at Avila University with a national or international destination, when the student is accompanied by an Avila faculty member.
    2) On travel as part of an approved study-abroad experience.

*Course/lab fees will be in addition to the published tuition rate. A complete list of course/lab fees can be found in the course schedule and vary by major.
