Library Resources
The Hooley-Bundschu Library & Learning Commons provides access to over 30 databases, providing mostly academic journal articles and other resources relevant to a scholarly setting.
With Search Everything, the library search engine, it’s possible to check multiple databases at the same time.

Computers
The library offers laptops for check out. Each laptop comes pre-loaded with a standard suite of programs. Laptops with the following programs installed are available by request:
- Lockdown Browser
- Python
- Quickbooks
- SPSS
Laptops can be checked out for 6 hours, 7 days, or 30 days.
The Avila library expects all computers and equipment to be returned on time, fines will accumulate on overdue items.
The library also offers laptop chargers, mice, ethernet cords, and laptop carrying cases for checkout.
Other Equipment
Texas Instruments graphing calculators can be checked out from the library for an entire semester.
Headphones can also be checked out. These headphones can be used with library computers to view DVDs or listen to computer audio.
The library also offers the following A/V equipment for checkout:

- Tripod

Print Books
The best way to find library books is to search online with the Avila Online Catalog.
Most library books are stored in our Auxiliary Stacks. Circulation Desk staff are happy to retrieve books from the stacks for you to view or check out.
The library’s reference, oversized, and education collections are located in the library and are easily browsable.
Requesting Books
Books can be requested from the Avila catalog by clicking the Place a Hold button on a book’s page.
If a book is not found in our collection, it may be requested from one of the following sources:

In addition to the library’s many online databases, over 100 print magazines and journals are available for browsing in the Learning Commons.
Avila patrons are welcome to read journals while in the library. Avila faculty may check out journals at the Circulation Desk.
The library keeps the 2 most recent years of each journal in the Learning commons. Older editions are stored in the library’s Auxiliary Stacks. Circulation Desk staff are happy to retrieve them for you.

Through the library, Avila students, staff, and faculty can claim a free subscription to the Wall Street Journal.
The library has a print subscription to the Kansas City Star and the New York Times,
Today’s edition of each paper can be borrowed from the Circulation Desk. Newspapers from the previous 12 months can be found next to the print journals.
Avila patrons are welcome to read newspapers while in the library. Avila faculty may check out newspapers at the Circulation Desk.
Online Videos
The library provides you access to 37,000+ academic and general interest films with Films on Demand.
DVDs
The library also has over 1,500 popular DVDs available for use by students, staff and faculty.
Faculty DVDs are reserved for faculty and staff. Students are welcome to watch faculty DVDs while in the library.
Avila students, as well as faculty and staff, are welcome to check out student DVDs.
Both student and faculty DVDs are browsable in the library and online. Use the search box on this page or visit the Avila Online Catalog.
If you need access to an article or book that is not found in our collection, consider requesting it through Interlibrary Loan (ILL).
Before you submit an interlibrary loan, please ensure that the requested item is not in the Avila collection.
Requests for articles are typically filled within 7 days, requests for books within 14. We will make every effort to deliver requested items to patrons as soon as possible.
Approximate Delivery Time Frames
- MOBIUS In-State Books: 5-7 days.
- MOBIUS Out of State Books: 7-10 days.
- Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Articles: 4-7 days.
- Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Books: 7-14 days.

Avila librarians are available on Navigate for appointments and walk-in assistance. Make a Navigate appointment with a librarian by selecting the option for Academic Success/Tutoring.
Tutorials
The library offers dozens of tutorials with introductory information that enhances your use of library resources.
When accessing library databases from a non-Avila computer, we use a sign-in page to verify your Avila credentials in order to provide you with full access to library resources.
Logging On
The login information for this page is the same server as it is for other Avila programs such as Canvas, MyAU and Navigate.
If you are not able to sign in, please double-check your information and try again. If problems persist, call (815.501.3621) or stop by the library Circulation Desk.
If an error prevents access to any library database, please contact the Library Director Tom Pfeifer for further assistance.
Books, computers, and more can be easily renewed online. To do this, select Renew Your Materials from the menu on the left-hand side of this page, or click on the See My Bookshelf link tab or select the link below:
The login information for this page is the same server as it is for other Avila programs such as Canvas, MyAU and Navigate.
Once logged in, click on the menu option that shows your currently checked out items. You will see a list of your currently checked out items, including due dates. Simply click Renew All or select specific items to renew and click Renew Marked.
Some items are not renewable online, due to checkout rules or requests from other patrons. If unable to renew your items online, please stop by the library’s circulation desk or call us (816.501.3621) and we will renew any items that are eligible for renewal.
The library assesses fines for some overdue items and replacement fees on any lost or damaged items. Fines are assessed when you return an item, and vary from 10 cents a day for books, to a 20-dollar minimum on most laptops and computing equipment.
If you have outstanding fines, please stop by the library circulation desk to pay them off. Unpaid fines or fees may result in your balance being transferred to your Avila business account or a hold being placed. The library can only accept cash as payment for fines at this time.

Reservations can be made by stopping by the library’s Circulation Desk, or by phone (816.501.3621).

Reservations for all rooms other than the Hager Family Study Room (1) require a group of 3 or more.
All other desktop computers, tables, chairs and booths in the library are first-come, first-serve. If a room isn’t reserved, it reverts to first-come, first-serve as well.

Each semester Avila students receive $30.00 in print credits. Unless these credits have all been used, no payment is necessary.
If you run out of print credits, you can add more to your account at the library circulation desk. We can only accept cash.

How to Print
You can print to a library printer the normal way from an Avila desktop computer. You can also use our printers from your personal computer with print.avila.edu. It’s quick and easy to print from your personal computer, but there are a few limitations.
Print.avila.edu Requirements
When printing from through print.avila.edu, the website decides on the output format for you. This means that your document will be printed double-sided in greyscale. Also, the website doesn’t accept Microsoft word. You will need to convert word documents to PDF in order to print. The library Circulation Desk is happy to assist you with this.
Printing with Print.avila.edu
- Log in to print.avila.edu (using the same credentials as for Canvas, MyAU or Navigate)
- In the left-side menu, click Web Print.
- On the next page, click the Submit a Job button.
- Select LIB-SLOAN as your printer and click on Print Options.
- Choose how many copies of your document you need and click Upload Documents.
- Upload your document and click Upload & Complete.
- Collect your printed document from the Sloan Printer (located across from Study Room 1).

BrowZine
BrowZine is a great way to read the journals that the library subscribes to. With BrowZine, you can read whole issues, save articles to your bookshelf and stay up to date with the latest content.

EBSCO databases are the heart of the Avila library’s online collections. EBSCO Mobile lets you take hundreds of thousands of books and journals with you wherever you go. You can also save articles to read later, and sort by full text and peer reviewed materials.

Browser Extensions
LibKey Nomad
LibKey Nomad is an extension that works with almost every web browser. As you browse the internet, LibKey Nomad helps you bypass paywalls on content the library owns, so you get fast and easy access to full text content.
Software
Microsoft Office
Avila students, faculty and staff can download Microsoft Office, which includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint and several other programs.
IT services maintains an app server. Many programs are available for download from the server.

Tutoring is available by appointment and on a walk-in basis. The Tutoring Center is located in the back of the library, next to the Writing Center. The sign-in kiosk for study jams is also located in the Tutoring Center. Specialized tutoring for Math and Science can be found in O’Reilly Hall, Room 222.

IT’s Information Services desk is located right next to the Circulation Desk at the entrance to the library.
The Information Services desk can help with password resets and other routine problems. If no one is available, you can check with the library Circulation desk for further assistance.

The IT services website is a great resource. There you can download software, reset your password, submit a help ticket, and more.
TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is located in the back of the library, between the quiet study area and the history wall.
SSS offers various free services designed to ensure first generation, income-eligible full-time students on the Avila University campus are successful in their academic career to ensure a timely progression to degree completion. These include:

The Avila Writing Center is a free service dedicated to supporting students with any writing project they are working on, be it a class essay, research paper, literature review, presentation, or resume. One-on-one consultations are held in the back of the library, next to the Tutoring Center, on both an appointment and walk-in basis.
