Raised in Kansas City, Teresa Johnson is an artist that grew up with creative parents that encouraged her to make art from a young age. After earning her BFA in Painting from Emporia State University, she then went on to earn an MFA in Photography from Kansas State University. While in graduate school, she also spent equal time exploring printmaking and teaching herself alternative photographic processes. She taught photography at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA, before landing back in Kansas City at Avila University. She has earned awards for her teaching and for her work and has been accepted into numerous exhibitions throughout the United States. Her work is an evolving conversation about processes merged with contemporary concepts. From painting and drawing to printmaking and sewing, she crafts unique pieces that form a visual framework for the ideas that interest her and speak to that particular time in her life. Her newest body of work, tilted Raising Them, showcases fiber arts that incorporate a traditional cyanotype process on repurposed clothing and explores the themes of motherhood and masculinity in today’s world.
