Avila Upward Bound Students Receive Dell Scholarships

(April 10, 2017) KANSAS CITY, MO – Two Ruskin High School students, Terren Jones and Rajae Hazziez, who are also participants in the Avila University Upward Bound program, have both received Dell scholarships from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation.

While many students dream of obtaining a college degree, life sometimes gets in the way – particularly for those dealing with personal responsibilities at home or in their communities. The Dell Scholars program recognizes students who have overcome significant obstacles to pursue their educations. In turn, these scholars serve as positive role models and change the trajectories for their families, friends and their communities.

“I can’t put into words how thankful I am for the Avila Upward Bound program and the many opportunities it has given to me,” Jones said. “The scholarship application process can be trying because you have to relive all your adversities, but it is because of my Upward Bound program that I am able to call myself a Dell Scholar.”

Avila University Upward Bound is a federally-funded program designed to provide educational access and assistance to income-eligible, first-generation and/or students with a disability. Upward Bound programs supplement the student’s high school experience with academic enrichment services, career exploration, self-development opportunities, cultural exposure opportunities and assistance with college admissions and financial aid searches.

“The Dell Scholarship was intimidating at first, there were a lot of essay prompts, some of which inquired on my personal life, Hazziez said. “Despite these things I was still able to complete the scholarship because of the encouragement and support I received from the Upward Bound staff. I got a call from a friend, who is also a Dell Scholar, and we both celebrated our win. In the fall, I will be attending Missouri Southern State University, majoring in dental hygiene.”
