Chemistry of Brewing's Beer Tasting
April 13, 2018
Whitfield Conference Center
Join the Avila University Alumni Association as they sample beer that students from the "Chemistry of Brewing" class have brewed in an integrated lab as part of their final project.
You may stop by anytime between 3-4:30 p.m. Light snacks will be provided. This event is free for guests 21 and older, but pre-registration is requested.
Taught by 2017 Professor of the Year Dr. Joe Roberts, Chemistry of Brewing teaches the prevalence of home-brews and microbrews has essentially transformed the brewing of beer into an art form. While the basic concepts behind beer are shared across the world, each unique set of brewers has their own process to contribute to the beer community. Come learn more of what Avila students have learned this semester!
An Evening with John Dear
April 17, 2018
Reception at 6 p.m., lecture immediately following at 7 p.m.
Whitfield Conference Center
Join us for an evening reading, reflection and book-signing with longtime activist, priest, author and Nobel peace prize nominee John Dear about his new book, “They Will Inherit the Earth,” a landmark work which connects the way of active nonviolence with solidarity with Creation; shows how our global epidemic of violence and war could only lead to catastrophic climate change; and why we need to help build up the global grassroots movement of nonviolence if we are to protect creation. He cites Jesus’ third Beatitude as the basis for his meditation: "Blessed are the meek, they will inherit the earth." Thomas Merton said "meekness" was the biblical word for “nonviolence” (in the Gandhi/King sense), so Dear notes how Jesus connected nonviolence with oneness with creation, how he practiced nonviolence and lived at one with creation, and how we need to do the same. John Dear will invite us to rise to the occasion, deepen our nonviolence, take new steps into active solidarity with Mother Earth and suffering humanity, and do what we can to welcome a new culture of peace and nonviolence.
