Anesthesiologist assistants are work under the direction of licensed anesthesiologists (specialist physicians) and as part of an anesthesia care team which designs and implements anesthesia care plans. They are highly skilled health care professionals.

They work with patients before, during and after anesthesia to ensure quality and continuity of care. Anesthesiologist assistants are also trained to assist in life-saving measures, including CPR and advanced cardiac life support.

Responsibilities include: acquiring patient health histories; physical exams concerning anesthesia effects including administering diagnostic tests; monitoring the patient during procedures; assisting with preparatory procedures; calibrating instruments; and monitoring functions in the intensive care unit and pain clinics.
