Director’s Notes

Sarah Ruhl’s EURYDICE is a heartrending tale that navigates the themes of love and loss. As we present this modern take on an ancient myth, our audience witnesses the poetic dance of memory and the pain of attachment against the backdrop of the underworld. The narrative centers on the reunion between Eurydice and her deceased father in the afterlife — a poignant exploration of paternal love that transcends mortal bounds. This is juxtaposed with the love she has for her young husband, Orpheus.

Our chorus of stones have been brought to life using sign language — a testament to our students’ innovation and hard work. This element not only enhances the narrative
but also engenders multisensory engagement, emphasizing that life’s experiences often transcend words. The dedication our students have invested in rehearsals, design, and construction of this piece intertwines the magical with the mortal. It is a privilege to witness their talent shaping this powerful story.

We invite you to experience the magical realism of EURYDICE as you would a moving poem—allow its rhythms and emotions to wash over you. Enjoy!
