40th annual Steer Dinner raises record-breaking funds for student scholarships during Avila’s centennial year
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avila University put an exclamation mark on its 100th anniversary by raising more than $1 million in student scholarships at its 40th Annual Steer Dinner & Auction Saturday night.
The $1,176,697 raised is the most in the event’s history. Funds raised at the annual event directly benefit Avila University students, ensuring that 98 percent of undergraduate students receive some form of financial assistance that enable them to receive a values-based education.
More than 670 guests attended the event hosted by Honorary Chairs Sisters of St. Joseph and the Steer Dinner Anniversary Chairs, representing eight decades of alumni.
Avila President Ron Slepitza recognized each of the chairs during the event and thanked them for their support.
“I am humbled by the efforts of our alumni, donors and friends to raise more than $1.17 million for student scholarships at the Steer Dinner. What a wonderful way to celebrate 150 years of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Kansas City and 100 years of Avila University,” Slepitza said.
The event honored three important milestones in the university’s history, including 150 years of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet impacting Kansas City through the founding of St. Teresa’s College, now Avila University; 100 years of the university; and 40 years of the institution’s Steer Dinner.
For 40 years, Avila University has given back to its students and watched them succeed in the process. In total, the Steer Dinner has raised more than $10 million in scholarships since the first event in 1977.
