Gerald Butters teaches special topics in film history courses several times a year at Avila University.  Some of his popular courses have been African-American film, American Film Comedy, Spike Lee, and Blaxploitation Films.

His research and publication specialty, though, is Film History. He has published a number of books, articles and reviews, most of them focusing on the intersection of race and gender in American popular culture. His publications have appeared in Cercles, Film and History, The Journal for Multimedia History, Film/Literature Quarterly, Scope, Kansas History, and The Journal of Men’s History. His book, Black Manhood on the Silent Screen (2002), was published by the University of Kansas Press. Butters is presently working on two books; one is on state film censorship and the other is an anthology on blaxploitation films.

Butters is a self-avowed film nut and his interests include running, working out, and the Chicago Cubs.
