I began
working for the Upward Bound Program in 2008. My previous
TRIO experience was with the University of Kansas Educational
Talent Search program, where I served as the high school academic
advisor for 4 years. I received my Bachelor's degree
from Illinois State University in Biological Sciences and
my Master's Degree in Education from the University of Kansas.
In addition to being the Director of the UB program, I also
serve as the head volleyball coach at Avila. I have
always enjoyed working with students and find working with
in TRIO programs incredibly rewarding. |

I have worked for Avila University's Upward Bound program
for a few months. Previously, I was a technical writer at
a corporation that specializes in healthcare information technology.
In college, I worked for Upward Bound Math & Science two
summers as a TA. I went to Northwest Missouri State University
and graduated with a double major in English and Spanish and
Secondary Education teaching certifications. I worked on a
Master's in School Guidance and Counseling but have switched
to Avila's Master's of Arts in Education, Teaching and Learning
concentration. It's going well so far! I wanted to work for
Upward Bound because I love working with students and love
the ideals that TRiO programs support. |

I am a current student majoring in Politcal Science. I am
a former Avila University Upward Bound participant. During
my time in the program, I learned many valuable lessons that
have molded me into the type of student and person that I
am today. I am also a coach for the Fightin' Roos Football
youth football team. I am a firm believer of taking advantage
of the opportunities provided and giving others opportunities.

Gabriel

|
What is
your major/minor/grad program?
I am an international student enrolled in the MBA program with
an International Business major. I graduated in Mexico as an
Industrial Engineer from Instituto Tecnologico de Saltillo.
What areas do you tutor?
My primary area of tutoring is Spanish, but I can support those
who need help in Algebra and Geometry.
Why did you want to become a UB tutor?
Being a tutor gives me the chance to learn more about the culture
and young people. In addition, I can help students to reach
their goals and be successful in their lives.
What is something fun someone would like to know about
you?
The first time I met the guys from Grandview High School I was
freaked out; to me it was the first time working with young
people from the US, so when I was starting my mind was thinking
in Spanish, so I was in trouble when I started to speak in English.

What is
your major/minor/grad program?
I am a Biology and Pre-health double major, with a minor in
Chemistry.
What areas do you tutor?
I tutor any science courses and some math.
Why did you want to become a UB tutor?
I wanted to be a UB tutor because I enjoy the interactions I
am able to have with the students. The time I spend teaching
students about the subjects I love, reaffirms my dedication
to the major of my choice and inevitably the career path that
I will follow. Also, I like to think that I am able to share
some of my experiences with the students and help to guide them
towards subjects they may enjoy, but have disliked before.
What is something fun someone would like to know about
you?
A fun fact about me would be that I am a left-handed golfer!
