On
Wednesday, February 25, 2009 six Avila senior nursing students and
faculty advisor joined over 550 RN's and nursing students from across
Missouri at the state capital in Jefferson City for the 23rd Annual
Missouri Nurse Advocacy Day sponsored by MONA (Missouri Nurses Association).
Advocacy day provides
an opportunity for RN's and nursing students to:
- expand their understanding of the legislative process as a means
of advocating for their patients and their practice and educating
state and federal legislators,
- observe the legislative process in action and understand the
significance of nursing advocacy in shaping health care and public
policy,
- acquire knowledge regarding successful grassroots lobbying techniques
as a means of advocating for and protecting patients and nursing
practice.

At
the Advocacy Day wrap up, Jessica Williams shared that the
students from Avila had gained a greater appreciation of
the legislative process and the impact that policy has on
health care.
