STUDENT TEACHING
Student Teaching is the clinical, capstone experience for both undergraduate students and graduate certification students. Student teachers are placed in school districts of the student's choice (if possible) to apply teaching skills under the supervision and assistance of a cooperating teacher. All student teaching experiences are additionally supervised by an Avila University supervisor. Undergraduates student teach for 10 weeks (or 2, 8-week placements if certifying in K-12 Vocal Music, Art, SPED). Graduate Certification students teach for a total of 8 weeks to fulfill their requirements for clinical experience.
STUDENT TEACHING POLICY
Under the guidance of a cooperating teacher and a university supervisor, the preservice teacher will gradually and effectively assume full responsibility for a classroom and all related duties during his/her student teaching experience.
Student teachers will be visited by their university supervisor a minimum of three times.
A student who must complete two (2) student teaching placements; must be successful (defined as a B or better) at the first placement in order to begin the second placement. If the student is not successful, the student may not be allowed to begin the second placement until agreed upon improvements have been demonstrated.
Student teachers are required to attend Student Teaching Seminar during the semester they are student teaching.
Procedure:
The student teacher will contact their university supervisor to arrange times for the supervisor to observe the student teacher, provide feedback and instruction for the student teacher.
The student teacher will enroll in ED 494/594 Student Teaching Seminar concurrently with ED 495/595/596 Student Teaching/Internship.
